Global Body is a mixed media sculpture depicting a metaphor for social injustice. I chose to create a wounded torso to represent earth's mosaic of human diversity being violently ripped open by social injustices. It is an invitation to enter into the visual and tactile artwork, and reflect on one's own ideas and experiences of social injustices, while gazing through the sinewy wound into the torso's cavity. The interior is a luminescent burnished gold representing my idea that, essentially, we are all made of beautiful spirit.

Collage is my medium of choice. It takes over my dining room table. It throws me into a liminal space where suddenly hours have elapsed and my hands are sticky with half-dried glue. Even long after completion, I find bits of paper clinging to my feet. Collage invites the creator to transform old materials into a new image, simple from afar and complex upon further inspection. In this piece, I used tentacles, coral, and crystals from a 2019 Cavallini Curiosities Calendar to create this crystalline eye.

Andrea Carlson
Grande Prarie, AB

Andrea Carlson is an Art Therapist and Counsellor at a Women’s Shelter in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

For quite some time I've wanted to focus more on creating art, and with the recent slowing-down of other aspects of my life I have been able to carve out more time and space to devote to art-making. I reconnected with a long-time friend, artist and fellow art school graduate to set up bi-weekly online meetings to share our art and engage in meaningful and enriching conversations about art, life and everything in between.
