President's Message

Spring is coming. It’s still cold and snowy but the change in light makes me want to throw open my windows and start seeds to sow in my garden. Spring is always slow to come in the east coast but we sure are eager for it.

I have spent winter trying to stay warm, and healthy. And learning new skills. It always feels good to learn something new in the colder months when I just want to be home, on the couch, cozy under a blanket, but still wanting to be creative. Making things helps with my mental health during the darker months and gives me a much-needed serotonin boost. This winter I learned how to punch needle. It was challenging, frustrating at times, and I poked myself more than once, but the process was also satisfying - watching the fabric fill with colour. The end result also makes me happy - a completed work that I should title ‘Winter 22/23’ with its dark and light coming together.

Looking forward to spring and beyond I am find myself eager for longer days, the first crocuses pushing up through the snow, buds emerging on the trees, and to reconnecting with people on warmer days.

I am so excited for the 2023 CATA conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland, our first in person conference since 2019. I can’t wait to connect face to face again, to share and learn and grow together. So grateful to the committee there who are committed to making this happen. Hope to see you there!
